Hi y’all! Over the last few months I have been organizing and decorating my new office. It has turned out to be an odd combination of crafty + feminine + Boho, yet somehow it all works well together! I am very pleased with my new space but my bare walls needed some life. So I decided to make a super easy DIY Boho wall hanging using a placemat!
I know it sounds odd but I promise it doesn’t look as cheap as it sounds. My sister actually told me that I should make them to sell on Etsy. But I thought I’d share my secret with you instead.😉
What You Need To Make An Easy DIY Boho Wall Hanging
Materials:
- Placemat
- Dowel Rod
- Macramé Cord
- String or Yarn
- Paint
- Hot Glue Sticks
Tools:
- Hot Glue Gun
- Sponge Paint Brush
- Scissors or Knife
- Cardboard template
Step 1: Paint the dowel rod
Your very first step is to paint the dowel rod, or you can leave it as is for a more natural look.
*I used Behr paint in the color Calligraphy.
Step 2: Making the macrame tassels for an easy DIY Boho wall hanging
Tip: Turn on your hot glue gun so it will be ready to use in step 3!
1: Cardboard template + Creating tassel base

Your first step will be to cut out a piece of cardboard that is 10 cm long. The width doesn’t really matter, just as long as you are comfortable holding it (mine is approximately 10.5 cm wide). Then, leaving about a 1 inch tail, wrap the macrame cord around the cardboard template 5 times. Once you have 5 strands cut the cord, leaving about a 1 inch tail again.
2: Tie cord together and trim

Next you will need to cut a 6 inch strand of cord. Then slide it under the 5 strands that are wrapped around the cardboard template and tie it in a single knot. Once the strands are secure, carefully slide them off of the cardboard and snip the ends.
3: Create a loop, wrap, and tighten

Start by gathering the tassel in your hand and laying a new strand of cord on top of the tassel. Be sure to leave a couple of inches extended.
(I recommend leaving the cord attached to the roll for this step!)
Then, pinching the loose strand between your thumb and index finger, wrap the cord up around your middle finger to create a loop. Next, continue to wrap that strand of cord around the tassel 3 times. Be sure to keep it tight!
Once you have it wrapped, cut the cord and run it through the backside of the loop. Then pull up on the cord sticking out of the top to fully tighten the loop.
Repeat these 3 steps to make more tassels!
4: Trim and visualize

After you have all of your macrame cord tassels made, trim the ends, as well as, the top strand that you pulled to tighten the loop.

Now gather the top 2 strands and tie them together with string (or yarn). Then place them on the backside of the placemat to get a visual before gluing them down.
Step 3: How To Put Together An Easy DIY Boho Wall Hanging
1: Add the macrame cord tassels to the placemat

This step is what puts the word “easy” in this Easy DIY Boho Wall Hanging!
Note: Be sure that you glue the macrame cord tassels to the
BACKSIDE of the placemat!
Simply add a generous dab of hot glue where you want the tassel to go, then carefully press it into the glue.
I did not want that top bundle of cord showing so I placed the top of the knot at the bottom of the placemat.
Repeat this step with all of the tassels.
2: Add the dowel rod to the placemat

In this step you’ll lay the dowel rod on the backside of the placemat (opposite end of the macrame cord tassels). Then wrap the end seam of the placemat over the dowel rod and hot glue it.
*DO NOT glue the seam to the dowel rod, glue it to the backside of the placemat. This way the dowel rod will slide out in case you need to replace it one day.
3: How to hang your easy DIY Boho wall hanging

Wrap the macrame cord tightly around the dowel rod 9 times, working from the outside in. Glue down the end with hot glue and trim. Then measure 26 inches (or whatever your hanging preferences is) and begin wrapping the cord around the dowel rod on the other end. But this time work from the inside out. Then glue that end down and trim.
Step 4: Where to Display this easy DIY Boho wall hanging
Now that you have this amazingly beautiful Boho wall hanging complete you may be wondering where to display it! I hung mine on my office wall. But another great spot would be in a foyer over a console table. Or even in the living room behind the couch!
I am no style expert but I do feel like this easy DIY Boho wall hanging can blend with a lot of different styles. My recommendation would be to find a placemat and macrame cord in the same color pallet as the room you will be hanging it in. The goal is for it to be a statement piece without sticking out like a sore thumb!
